In this 10-week course for high school students (grades 9-12), we will learn the craft of creative writing in three different genres– Flash Fiction, Personal Essay & Memoir, Poetry and Short Story– with the goal of submitting to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Devoting roughly two weeks to each genre, we will learn the fundamentals of each form, using award-winning entries in each category as models. Students will learn to both write and revise through repeated practice and peer review. The course will culminate in a portfolio of polished final drafts in all four genres, submitted at the end of the course.
